![]() We train our students to imagine and craft responsible and sustainable alternatives to local, regional, national, and global problems. In the Race and Ethnic Studies (REST) department, we study the complex and often challenging issues of race, ethnicity, and racism from an interdisciplinary. Our department offers a major (BA) and a certificate in ethnic studies as well as a combined Bachelor’s & Master’s Degree (BAM) in ethnic studies and education Our undergraduate program foregrounds civic engagement and service learning to foster thoughtful and compassionate leaders and stewards of the ʻāina. As ethnic studies scholars, we specialize in race and ethnicity as they intersect with indigeneity, class, gender, and sexuality in Hawaiʻi, the United States, and Oceania. A professionally edited and formatted version of the model curriculum will be available at a later time. Our research and teaching are interdisciplinary and transnational. As Ethnic Studies educators, we believe that we are a manifestation of our ancestors visions, carrying them with us in into the spaces that we occupy. Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum The model curriculum was adopted by the SBE on March 18, 2021. Ethnic Studies is an interdisciplinary, comparative concentration that examines the construction of race and ethnicity in social, cultural, historical. The department centers on histories, contemporary experiences, and cultural expressions of Native American/Indigenous people, Black/African Americans, Chicano/a/xs. The Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa focuses on comparative analyses of racial and ethnic groups and inequalities among them through the lens of social justice. Ethnic Studies at Stanislaus State is a department that engages critical, intersectional, decolonial, and community-responsive approaches to racism, racialization, and sovereignty.
